DIY Cut Outs

Inspired by A Pair and a Spare's DIY Weekly Projects, I decided to give the cut out shirt project a try. It's a super simple project, and I have to admit, it turned out pretty awesome. I've already worn it twice!

First, I started with an oversized navy silk shirt, a ruler, sharp scissors, and a white pencil:

Next, I drew a straight line at the shoulder blades and used a hat to shape a curved line underneath:

After I cut that section out, I realized two things: first, that I should have started above the pleats on the back (to do away with those crazy folds you see below) and second, that I wanted the cut out to be larger.

So I made some small alterations, and ta-da!

  1. Oh, I love this! I've always really dug cut-out pieces and I've wanted to try it myself for some time, but I'm always so nervous to... This definitely inspires me to go for it though. I think I have the perfect piece to alter too! Lol! Great work, Natale!

  2. Awesome idea! I have some tops I bought at thrift stores that I just don't wear, maybe I'll try this on a couple of them as a last-chance before I oust them from my closet.

    Thanks for sharing!

  3. Oh I see, you leave Sactown and get all prolific on your blog! Loving this DIY. I just bought a silk polka dot Lanvin men's shirt and am gonna cut holes outta the shoulders!

I love hearing your thoughts... show me some love and I'll show it right back.
